Teams to Challenge at the “17th Annual National BBI”

Memphis War Eagles – 3rd Grade Team – 2009
“8 & Under AAU National Champions”

The Memphis War Eagles 8 & Under team won the 2009 AAU National Championship in Orlando, Florida. The team used steady pressure, good ball handling, and overall smart basketball astute. The guards are some of the best on the ball defenders in their age group.

The team is loaded with arguably the best point guard in the country in, Joseph Cooper.  One on one he cannot be checked. He is the best passer in the age group.   Compliment that with the team’s center, Chandler Lawson, is also a strong passer, who can put it on the floor and a top rebounder.  The kid is 9 years old, wears an 11 shoe, can palm two basketballs and is 5’4”.  He can throw a full court bounce pass on a dime.  If, they ranked players in this age group they would rank #1 & #2, interchangeably.

Octavious Collum is one of the most athletic kids on the team. He is 5’2” and can handle the ball and is tough on the boards. Coach Newsom’s second son, Rodney Newsom, Jr., is 8 years old and wears a size 8 shoe.  Overall they have great size for their age group and overall talent.
The key to this team is they can pass as if they have eyes in the back of their head.  Coach describes this team as a special group of kids.  This is by far the best team he has ever coached.  He stated that he had five kids run the 400 in a minute and 12 seconds. The team is the biggest team and maybe the quickest team in the Nation.  Several of the players play on the 10 & under team. Coach Rodney Newsom, Sr.  has been coaching boys’ basketball for over 11 years, and has had other national qualifying teams.

The Memphis War Eagles 10 & under placed 5th in the 2009 “9 & Under AAU National Championship”. Their competition amongst others will be the Arkansas Hawks coached by Kevin Howard who took 3rd Place in the “9 & Under AAU National Championship”.

Coach Howard’s Arkansas Hawks team won the 2009 – 9U Kansas City Keys National Best Basketball Invitational. This is an explosive scoring team with the point guards carrying the load. The team plays lock-down defense and willingly sacrifice their individual efforts for the benefit of the team.  This group really understands their role, maintains composure and gets it done.  They will be back to maintain their #1 ranking.

ARKANSAS JAGUAR GIRLS RISING IN THE SOUTH!

We have heard of these overall good and big boys teams for years. We have also been a witness. This year the Keys event will feature two 8th Grade girls from the same team, that are exceptionally tall.  Angelina Williams is 6’5” and Jalisa Ruth is 6’4”. They both can run the floor and both finish decently. When you have a front line that is 6’4” and 6’5” you can play volleyball and badminton until the ball goes in. Add to that some good guards, Gianna Alexander,  Malica Monk, Olivia “Jump out the Gym” Hull, Damanique Miller and two other 6’ reserve players,  and we will call them team Stacked.
This Jaguars 8th Grade team sports a frontline that is taller than what most women’s college teams are able to field.  (At press time we were deliberating on whether this would hurt the opportunity for teams to compete in this event knowing the ultimate competition they would face!)

The Arkansas Jaguars little team (6th Graders) have only one 6’ player. The rest are a bunch of guards that have dominated the Central and Northern Arkansas teams in that region. The coach,  Army Staff Sargeant who played overseas, is unsure of how good his team is and looks forward to this team being tested in the Keys 17th Annual National BBI.

Texas Titans – 7th Grade Team – 2009
“12 & Under AAU National Champions”

The Texas Titans from Dallas, TX won the 2009 12U Division 1 AAU National Championship in Hampton, VA.   In 2009, they competed in 13 tournaments resulting in a win loss record of 64 - 1.  They played in tournaments in Texas, Indiana, Maryland, Arkansas and Florida.  Their goal as a basketball organization is to develop their players’ Christian beliefs, character, integrity and positive attitudes by using basketball as the vehicle.  They are very proud of the team’s success on the court but more proud of whom they are becoming as young men.  The 13U Texas Titans will be led by 6'-61/2" Mickey Mitchell, 5'-101/2 Grant Troutt, 5'-8" Matthew Merrick, 5'-7" KaJuan Malveau, 6'-5" Samir Sehic, 6'-1" Soso Jamabo, 6'-0" DJ Hogg, and Newcomer 6'-2" Jessie Pistokache.

One of the most competitive Hoops Program since it’s origination in 1996, the Arkansas Hawks teams are consistently good and rank as a top team in the country.  This team placed 3rd in the 8U in 2007 AAU Nationals, 9th in 9U in 2008 AAU Nationals and 6th in 10U in 2009 AAU Nationals.  The team Placed 1st in Arkansas State AAU 2007 - 2009.  Won tournaments in the following states in 2009 Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, and Tennesee.  They were winners of the Keys 15th Annual Tournament in 2008.
