Kingwood Classic April 22-24 in Houston
Pool Play: Lost to Team Melo from Maryland 62-47. Then won our second game 49-41 against Coast to Coast Basketball from New York. We were second out of pool play. This gave us a bye the first round of the bracket play. Unfortunately we lost that game to Team CBiz Ohio Pride to send us all home. This was the first major tournament for many of the boys and they enjoyed taking the bus to Houston and staying in the hotel as well as getting to see so many other teams play.
Spiece 2005 Run ’n Slam April 29-May 1st in Fort Wayne
Pool play: Played the Arkansas Hawks in our first pool game and lost 59 to 53. Then had two decisive wins in our 2nd and 3rd games against the Grand Rapid Lightening and Portland Disciples. We earned a bye the first round of the tournament which was good, because we only had 7 players. But these 7 players really put on show. We won our first game against the DC Dawgs 76 to 58. Then in a surprise upset (at least for the other team) we won against the Michigan Mustangs, who had a full compliment of 10 plus players, 70 to 67. It was sheer determination and team play that kept us in the game. But we ran out of legs and lost the next game to Team Next 59 to 67. The team was extremely happy with their play especially after the Houston Tournament. We were beginning to really come together as a team and made it all the way to the quarter finals.
Mayb Tournament in Blue Springs
This was a good tournament for the boys. They played in the Varisty Division and won the tournament. We had 4 or 5 very closely fought games including the final game which went into 4 overtimes and which we finally won against a team from Oklahoma. All of the boys played extremely well together as a team.
LAS Vegas Main Event: July 22nd – 26th
Pool play: We started out very strong winning all of our pool play games. We beat Sporting Chance Tucson 51-45, Houston Heat 66-46 and Georgia Smyma Starts 51-45. Then we lost our first tournament game to the West Coast Allstars. This was a big disappointment to all of the boys and their parents. Despite this, everyone had fun in Las Vegas walking on the Strip and shopping at all the stores.
USSSA National Championship Ft Wayne July 28 – Aug 1
Pool Play: The team won all of our pool play games to come out first in our pool. We beat Ball and Man Panthers 45 to 34, the Clayton Titans 66 to 58 and the Tiffany’s 42 to 46. Then we lost our first game in the tournament to Spiece Select by 2 points at the buzzer. But this was a double elimination tournament which meant we had the opportunity to fight back and fight back we did. We won our next 5 games starting with 2 games Saturday and then 3 games basically back to back on Sunday including beating the Spiece Select Team that pushed into loser bracket. We lost the against PAL in the semifinals to take 4th place in the tournament.
Kansas City Keys 16s
Las Vegas Main Event
The KC Keys 16s played in the Main Event held in Las Vegas July 21-26. There were a total of 78 teams for the Boys 16 & Under. After dropping the first pool game in overtime to the Rhode Island Hawks the boys went on a 6-0 winning streak winning all their games by double figures. Overall they finished 6-2
and advanced to the Final 4 teams of the Gold Division. They averaged over 70 ppg and after our first game we limited turnovers to under 12 turnovers pg.
Overall we were very competitive throughout the season making it to the finals, final 4 or final eight teams of every tournament we played in. The best game of the season was in Las Vegas against NE Ohio Shooting Stars, nationally ranked and sponsored by Lebron James, the boys came together and led the entire game winning by 15 points with an undersized team. NE Ohio had a front line of 7'0", 6'8" and 6'7" and Andrew Taylor (6'4") had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Throughout the tournament the 16's were led by the strong guard play of Chris Combs (Bishop Miege)- Avg 19 points per game and Reggie Chamberlin (Raytown)- Avg 16.5 points per game and excellent rebounding/scoring of Andrew Taylor (20 points/10 rebounds against NE Ohio).
Everyone contributed and had big games against strong competition throughout the tournament. The KC Keys team members who played in Las Vegas were: Reggie Chamberlain (Raytown), Chris Combs (Bishop Miege), Marquise Williams (Grandview), Tokie Aromona (O'Hara), Derrick Washington (Ray Pec), Andrew Taylor (Topeka Hayden), Jon Knollmeyer (Jeff City), Murphy Granger (Kearney), Dustin Smith (Spring Hill), Brad Harper (Warrensburg), Ernest Jones (KC Central) and Mike Sanders(O'Hara).
For the Season the Keys 16 & Under had an outstanding season placing 4th.
